Norfolk Southern’s Captina Secondary

From Employee James Trivett

Today I went up to the Captina Secondary to shoot the NS shuttle trains that run between two of Murray Energy’s mines, Ohio Valley Coal Powhatan #6 mine and American Energy Corporation’s Century mine and Murray’s Ohio Valley Transloading facility in Powhatan Point, Ohio.  On the way to Powhatan point I went by Ormet’s plant at Hannibal Ohio, located on the south end of a former Conrail line.  Ormet bought the track from Conrail back in 1996, although they have not used rail service in nearly twenty years.  The first shots are at the end of track and looking towards the rolling mills, now out of service.  The small yard is at the north end of the plant, which is still producing Aluminum sows, most of which leave via barge.  Just north of there I shot an old geep switching a plant across the river.  The bridge with the fishermen is at Clarington, between Ormet and Powhatan Point.  Continuing north I came across one of the three NS shuttle trains, each with 67 cars, that operate on the Captina Secondary.  The track is pretty rough down at this end.  Heading into Powhatan Point I caught another of the trains that was just pulling onto the Captina, the trains operate push pull, and have to pull north and then head south again to head up the Captina.  I shot this train, which was heading for the Century mine at the end of the line, as he came towards the SR 7 bridge and then went up the line to get a shot of him at the Powhatan #6 mine.  When I got there the third shuttle train was flood loading so I waited on the route 148 bridge for the Century train to get there.  While I was there I saw a cat and Bart got jealous.  After the meet I went on up to Century and got some shots from up on high and then some from down on low.  After that I headed for home, when I was almost to Belpre on route 7 I could see a CSX local just starting over the bridge into Ohio, so I got a quick shot of him on the Ohio side before heading home.  Based on the cars in his consist I would say he was headed to Globe Metals clear up by the AEP plant above Beverly.
